Reviewing your international communications

A review of international communications is the first step to improving communication with international customers and improving export success.

You may find that some members of staff already have language skills that can be used in certain circumstances. Even dormant language skills can be quickly developed and focused for business use. You should always, however, be aware that in some circumstances professional language and cultural service providers should be used, particularly in the case of formal communication. For example, a member of staff with skills in a foreign language could perhaps be used to process basic e-mail enquiries in that language, but only a professional translator with appropriate qualifications and experience should be used to translate formal company literature.

There are some aspects of reviewing your international communications that you can begin to assess yourselves within your company. You should begin to see where there might be skills gaps, opportunities for better use of resources and requirements for professional support: tackling these issues will dramatically improve your competitiveness in international markets.

For expert assistance from an external source you may be eligible for a subsidised Export Communications Review, a UK Trade and Investment scheme delivered by the British Chambers of Commerce. A registered consultant can visit your company to discuss your current business activities, look at the way you tackle the language and cultural issues that arise and make recommendations for overcoming the potential barriers identified.

You may also qualify for the 'Passport to Export' scheme, offered by UK Trade and Investment, which also offers subsidised support to new exporters. Businesses in Wales may be able to access the Export Assist programme.

Language Networks and Regional Language Networks, supported by CILT, the National Centre for Languages throughout the UK can advise you generally on how to find support for language and cultural skills and services, whatever your business needs are.
