Guidelines on using interpreters
Here are some tips in using the services of an interpreter which should help to ensure that everything goes smoothly:
  • Select an interpreter where possible with knowledge of your industry.

  • Always brief your interpreter in advance and send him/her relevant company material.

  • Treat interpreters as members of your team (they can pick up valuable information).

  • Do not assume someone who speaks the language is 'an interpreter'.
  • Ensure any equipment you are using is working in advance of the meeting.

  • Ensure the interpreter is positioned where they can see and hear everything - ask their advice in this too
  • Speak slowly, clearly and concisely at all times.
  • Ensure other delegates are aware of the interpreter's needs during the meeting.
  • Avoid using jargon, colloquialisms, puns or jokes. They could well be impossible to translate.
  • Remember that a qualified translator
(who deals with the written word) is not necessarily skilled as an interpreter.
