These
are linguists - usually with a postgraduate qualification in translating - who
work for an organisation full or part-time. They may offer several languages and
have the ability to judge the quality of translations from external providers.
Their knowledge needs to be specialised to the needs of the business.
Organisations out-source
the services of these providers - they fall principally into
three categories - either freelance translator, translation company or translation
agency.
- Freelance translator
These translators
work independently, either directly for an organisation on an ad hoc basis, or
through an agency.
- Translation companies
Companies
that specialise in translation may charge a higher rate, but may offer more back-up
in terms of project management and proofreading.
- Translation
agencies
Agencies offer translation and (usually) interpreting services, covering
a wide range of languages and specialisms. Similar support is offered in terms
of project management as by a translation company.
Unless
they are totally bilingual, professional translators only work into their native
tongue. Most competent translators belong to a professional association, which
monitors the qualifications and competence of its members, and defines codes of
